🎭 Character Descriptions – Pinocchio

Now that you've seen our Casting Call, it's time to meet the colourful characters that bring our pantomime to life!

Below you'll find a brief description of each role, along with the audition pages, songs and any special audition notes to help you prepare.

🤥 Pinocchio

👤 Gender: Male/Female
📖 Audition Pages: 25, 26 & 27
🎵 Audition Song: It's My Life – Bon Jovi

• Fresh, innocent and curious about the world.

• Has a great deal to learn before becoming a "real boy."

• Not naughty or foolish—simply inexperienced.

• His curiosity often leads him into trouble.

• Uses a mechanical voice when accessing his "encyclopaedic" memory.

• Punctuates his speech with quirky sound effects (e.g. a "meep meep" style noise).

⭐ Jimmy Crankit (Principal Boy)

👤 Gender: Open

🎵 Audition Song: Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen

• Kind-hearted and optimistic despite being treated poorly by Verruca.

• Quick-witted and resourceful.

• Full of energy, enthusiasm and vitality.

• Excitable and constantly on the move.

• A traditional pantomime hero with plenty of charm.

💖 Grazia (Principal Girl)

👤 Gender: Open

• Confident, determined and courageous.

• Knows there's an important mission to complete.

• Warm-hearted, caring and generous beneath her professional exterior.

• A strong heroine who leads with compassion.

🐍 Verruca (Villain)

👤 Gender: Male

• Appears friendly and trustworthy at first.

• Should not be instantly recognisable as the villain.

• His true, ruthless personality gradually emerges.

• Charming and persuasive on the outside, cold and calculating underneath.

🧚 Sapphire (The Blue Fairy)

👤 Gender: Female

• A lovable scatterbrain with a good sense of humour.

• Should be funny without becoming ridiculous.

• Has an important role in guiding the story.

• Must still be taken seriously by the audience.

🪵 Geppetto

• Elderly in appearance but young at heart.

• Innocent, imaginative and wonderfully eccentric.

• Possesses a playful sense of humour.

• Connects naturally with children without talking down to them.

• Warm, lovable and full of heart.

🦊 Fungus (The Fox)

👤 Gender: Male/Female

• Smooth, charming and impeccably polite.

• Appears to be a respectable gentleman.

• Uses his manners to disguise his true intentions.

• Sly, cunning and thoroughly untrustworthy.

🐱 Maggot (The Cat)

👤 Gender: Male/Female

🎵 Audition Song: Hundreds and Hundreds of Girls (same as Fungus)

• Tough, battle-scarred alley cat.

• Always looking for a fight.

• Fierce and intimidating...

• ...but not particularly bright!

• His lack of intelligence often gets him into trouble.

💃 Mama Scrumpi (The Dame)

👤 Gender: Male (Traditional Dame)

🎵 Audition Song: Hollywood Nights – Bob Seger

• Geppetto's childhood sweetheart (a secret she'd rather keep!).

• Rich, famous and larger than life.

• Extremely vain and convinced she looks years younger.

• Has retired from the spotlight to run her own "Fame" school.

• A classic pantomime dame with huge personality and plenty of comedy.

🎓 The Schoolchildren

These roles can be played by children, adults, or a mixture of both. Each character combines a classroom stereotype with a famous entertainment style.

👧 Baby Dimples

👤 Gender: Female

💃 Special Skills: Tap dancing required

• ⭐ Teacher's pet.

• 🎀 Spoilt but adorable.

• 🎬 Inspired by classic child stars.

• Sweet, precocious and eager to impress.

🎩 Charlie

👤 Gender: Male/Female

🎭 Special Notes:

• No speaking.

• Mime only.

• Characterise Charlie Chaplin.

• 🤡 The class clown.

• 🎥 Inspired by silent movie comedians.

• Performs almost entirely through mime (except during songs).

• Expressive physical comedy is essential.

🎸 Confetti

👤 Gender: Female

🎭 Special Notes:

• Audience interaction.

• Lots of energy required.

• 🤘 The school rebel.

• 🎤 Dreams of becoming a rock star.

• Can represent any recognisable music style from the 1950s onwards.

• Confident, energetic and full of attitude.

💄 Semolina

👤 Gender: Female

🎭 Special Notes:

• Audience interaction.

• Lots of energy required.

• 👊 A tomboy and playground bully.

• ✨ Being transformed into a glamorous "dumb blonde."

• Looks elegant but behaves wildly.

• Strong comic contrast between appearance and personality.

💪 Rambino

👤 Gender: Male

🎭 Special Notes:

• Audience interaction.

• Lots of energy required.

• 🪖 The class dunce.

• 🎖️ Cast as the "macho" action hero.

• Physically mismatched to the role—either a large, lazy character or a tiny weakling.

• A great opportunity for physical comedy.

🚣 Gondolier

• Small featured role with a few speaking lines.

Our Chorus & Dancers are at the heart of the pantomime, bringing every scene to life with energy, singing, dancing and plenty of fun! These performers take on a variety of exciting roles throughout the show.
